Application form

Download an application form.

When you sign the application form you will also be signing a declaration that you have reviewed the Engineers & Geoscientists Act.

Application fee

Please check the FEE SCHEDULE for the most current fees.

Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status

You need to provide a certified copy of your Canadian Citizenship (citizenship card, birth certificate or current Canadian passport) or Permanent Resident Status.

To have a copy certified make a photocopy of your document and have it signed and stamped by a P.Eng., P.Geo., or Notary Public as a "true copy of the original". Alternatively, you may bring your original document to the APEGBC office and we can make a certified copy for you at no cost.

Please do not send your original citizenship card, birth certificate, passport, or Permanent Resident status document to APEGBC.

Work Experience Details

This is a detailed description of your geoscience work experience. Please use the Geoscience Work Experience template when completing your work experience summary.

 The work experience template should be completed in first-person, typewritten/word-processed format on standard-sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches) and organized for clarity of reading. Your experience must be presented in chronological order and provide the following information for each position/employer:

  • dates of engagement, name of the employer, your position and the name and position of your professional supervisor;
  • a first-person description of the work for which you were responsible, including a description of the projects in which you were involved and your role in each project;
  • clearly identify the engineering/geosciences problems you encountered and how you solved them;
  • methods, resources, standards and codes upon which you relied to carry out the work;
  • supervision you provided (if any);
  • other details as applicable that clearly demonstrate to APEGBC’s reviewers the nature and level of your geosciences experience and your competence.

Any gaps or overlaps in time periods should be explained. APEGBC will be looking for evidence of a progression of experience and responsibility throughout your career. Note that publications and/or training do not count as part of the Work Experience Details Report and should be listed at the end.

GITs who record their experience using the Online Experience Reporting system do not need to submit work experience details in hard copy format but must follow the guidelines outlined above.

Self-Assessment Checklist and Syllabus

Please review the APEGBC geoscience checklists and syllabi, and select the checklist that most closely corresponds with your academic studies.

Demographic Information Form

You must submit a completed Practice Declaration Form.

Transcripts

A transcript is a document that lists all of the courses that you took and the grades that you received at your university/college/or other academic institute.  A transcript also usually states the name of your degree or diploma and the date on which it was granted.

You must ask your academic institute to send your transcripts directly to APEGBC via post or courier only.  APEGBC does not accept transcripts via fax or email from academic institutes.   If your academic institute is not able to send us your transcripts you must write a letter to APEGBC explaining your situation.   The letter should state how you have tried to get the transcripts and request that certified copies of the original transcripts already in your possession be accepted.  Universities can almost always send us your transcript.

If your academic institution requires a formal request from APEGBC to have your transcripts sent please forward them an APEGBC transcript request letter

If you are already a GIT with APEGBC, then your undergraduate transcript is on file.  However, if you have earned additional degrees since becoming enrolled as an EIT you must ask your university to send APEGBC these transcripts.  If you want to receive credit towards registration for your additional degrees then you must provide copies of your thesis abstracts.

Course Descriptions

Please submit course descriptions/course calendar for each of your academic geoscience-related classes. This can be sent to us directly from your university with your official transcripts, or we can accept a certified copy of course descriptions already in your possession.

The course descriptions will be used by APEGBC for your academic assessment.

References

On the application form you will be asked to nominate a minimum of four referees who can validate your geoscience experience.  Combined, the referees should cover as much of your geoscience experience as possible but a minimum of four years must be covered.  Credit may not be given for experience that cannot be validated by references and you may be asked to provide additional referees.

You are responsible for sending a blank reference form and a copy of your work experience details to each of your referees.  The referee must then send the completed reference form signed and dated directly to APEGBC by mail or fax. Completed reference forms signed and dated can also be emailed to register@apeg.bc.ca.

Reference forms submitted to APEGBC must be signed and dated by the referee, forms received without signature and date will be considered incomplete and not accepted.

Canadian experience must be verified by Canadian P.Geo. references. International experience must be verified by international referees.

Download a reference form.

Confirmation Request Form (Non-Resident License or Inter-Provincial Applicants Only)

A Confirmation Request Form filled out by all Associations/Ordre of which you are, or have ever been, a member. Please fill out the top portion of the form and fax it to the appropriate Associations/Ordre. They will complete the form and return it directly to APEGBC.

This is required only for applicants who hold P.Geo./P.Geol. or professional membership status in another Provincial Engineering Association or US State Board.

Professional Practice Examination (PPE)

Before being granted registration as a Professional Geoscientist you must successfully complete the Professional Practice Exam.

The PPE may be attempted after all academic requirements are met and you have obtained a minimum of twenty four months of geoscience experience.

Before being granted registration as a Professional Geoscientist you must complete the Law and Ethics Seminar requirement.

Academic Qualifications

To obtain your P.Geo. status you must demonstrate you that you have met the minimum academic requirements. The qualifications of each applicant are reviewed to ensure that all academic syllabus requirements are met.

Experience Qualifications

To become registered as a Professional Geoscientist or to obtain a Non-Resident Licence, you must demonstrate that you have a minimum of four years of satisfactory geoscience work experience. At least one of these years must be gained in a Canadian Environment. Normally, work experience in a Canadian Environment is gained in Canada, under the supervision of a Canadian Professional Geoscientist.

Acceptable geoscience work experience must include the application of the knowledge geoscience principles and practice. It should also provide exposure to, or experience in, the following broad areas: practical experience, management, communication, and the social implications of geoscience.

Up to a maximum of one year of pre-graduation or co-op experience may be accepted if it is supervised by the appropriate professional and if it otherwise satisfies all of APEGBC's experience criteria.   Applicants with post-graduate degrees may be given credit for geoscience experience gained as part of their post-graduate studies.
